Step Up in Faith like Caleb!

He was named “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today magazine, plus in 2005 Reader’s Digest declared him to be “The Best Preacher in America.” Everything Max writes is outstanding! Every morning, as part of my Bible time and prayer, I read several devotionals, including Max’s “God is With You Every Day!” Here is his selection for January 10.
Ask for Hebron
“When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.” Psalm 94:19 NLT
Turn a deaf ear to doubters. Ignore the naysayers. People have a right to say what they want. And you have a right to ignore them.
When the twelve spies reported back to Moses, all but Caleb and Joshua were spouting doubt (Numbers 13:26–33). They were outnumbered ten to two, but they still believed in God’s power. Let’s take our cue from Caleb. Disregard the lethal disbelief of cynics.
This is no sanction for rudeness or isolation. When people express their sincere struggles or questions, help them. But some folks do not want to be helped. They would rather pull you down than let you pull them up. Don’t let them.
Caleb didn’t. He filled his mind with faith and took on a God-size challenge.
When Moses sent Caleb to spy out the land, Caleb saw something that troubled him: the town of Hebron. Abraham had buried his wife there. He was buried there. So were Isaac, Rebekah, and Jacob. Hebron was a sacred site, but it was inhabited by unholy people. So Caleb asked Moses for Hebron.
Moses took the request to God, and Caleb was given the land. Forty-five years later, at the age of eighty-five, the old soldier chased the enemy and reclaimed the city.
Caleb wanted to do something great for God. He lived with a higher call. You can too. Ask for your Hebron.
Even at 85 years old, Caleb was willing to step out in faith to see a miracle happen. He did not decide to take it easy in his “golden” years. Instead, he chose to trust the Lord to help him accomplish a great victory. Caleb knew the outcome did not depend upon his own ability, but on God’s great ability. Even though Caleb was now getting up in age, the Lord had not changed. Jesus Christ is the Victor. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
No matter your age – young or old or somewhere in between – let Caleb be an inspiration to you. No matter the circumstances you are facing, the outcome depends completely upon the Lord. The good news is that He is able “to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). Let us not limit His miracle work by our lack of faith. Let us step up with great courage and great faith to believe Him for great things and to receive great things. Like Caleb, let’s “ask for Hebron!”

Last Sunday was a wonderful celebration of the goodness of God. The worship service was inspiring, the lunch was “ono-licious” and rich in fellowship, plus the Annual Meeting itself was a time of great unity and rejoicing. We thank the Lord for His great faithfulness to His church in the past in 2025 and now in 2026!
